There has been a great deal of confusion created by people and the media in regard to pit bulls. You will often find that the dogs referred to as a pit bull are in fact some other bred of dog altogether. Some of the most commonly misnamed dogs include American Staffordshire Terriers, The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Bulldog and Bull Terriers. Many dogs have been called Pit Bulls, and often the dog is nothing like a pit bull.

There are many types of pit bull terrier. You will find show dogs, working dogs and different line types, of which the Colby line is very popular. You also find different breed types. The real American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium sized dog that is muscular and weighs around 20 to 30 kilograms. Line types are where there has been a specific breeding program that can affect the breed type. The Colby line has been breed for around one hundred years; this has produced a distinctive looking dog. Sorrell dogs are another good example of a line type; these dogs are usually fawn in color with on other markings, and a black muzzle and nose area. So how do we get the red and blue nosed dogs?

It is suspected that the red nose dogs are from Irish stock and that Ireland started the red nosed trend. People started to call the dogs by their nose color. The red nosed dogs had a distinct red coat with a red nose and golden eyes. No matter what the color of the dogs nose there is only one Pit Bull and that is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Blue Pit Bull Terriers have the distinctive blue hue to their coat and the blue nose to match. Blue Pit Bulls are a very popular line type for this breed of dog.
